Knowing the Flock

The time of "kidding" has officially arrived.  I really enjoy this season so much!  Winter isn't yet over, but the daylight is lengthening and hints of spring are appearing.  The goats are more their "old selves" which really helps as I watch and wait for new arrivals.  The animals have their own personalities and endearing traits.  As their time for delivery nears, they begin to demonstrate changes in their behavior, becoming a bit more territorial and not as sociable.

When I first began homesteading I'd have my eye on one and invariably, another would deliver, but I'm learning as I go, and this year have recognized the imminent mom to be as opposed to the "not just yet" ladies in waiting.  The two that were most outstanding are, of course, the ones I know the best, because they spend more time with me, talking to me.  I've thought a great deal about my relationship with Abba, as I watch and listen to these animals.

The Ozarks has been very blessed with warmer weather this week and that has been a real plus, as new kids have arrived almost daily.  I had to go to town twice this week and both days, when I returned I knew there was about to be a new mamma.  Thankfully, I've been home for all the new arrivals and they have all come in the daylight.

Upon my return from town Wednesday, I could see one of the goats who is usually very friendly, just seemingly preoccupied.  Sure enough, by the time I got in and clothes changed, she was clearly preparing for birth.  I got to her just as the first one arrived.  The urgency in which she was nudging and licking this baby dry gave clear indication another one was on the way.  Less than ten minutes later, the second twin arrived.  This little mamma really needed no help, but I wiped it's little face just to give it a breathable head start, then stayed out of mamma's way.

Friday was a different situation.  I had taken Velvet's photo that morning.  She and I go back a lot of years, and as queen bee of the pygmies, it was unusual for her to be last to deliver, but by February 14th, she was the only one still waiting in that pasture.  I hurried in town as it was Preparation Day, as well as wanting to be on the homestead for Velvet's delivery.  She's getting along in years now, and although she's never had difficulty, I just wanted to be there.  As I got out of the wagon, I called to her, but there was no answer.  Velvet always has something to say!  I didn't even bother to change clothes, I just donned my muck boots and headed out back.

These two sweet little girls had just arrived.  With Purim celebration spanning two days, please allow me to introduce Esther                                                and                                                  Myrtle

A fashion statement for sure

All dry and enjoying Shabbat, outdoors!
