It's not too early to start planning a winter project. I've got a couple in mind and YHWH willing, I'll be heading toward implementing them. I've done some figuring. Since wheat has become a problem genetically speaking, I am hoping to figure a way and a spacing to be able to grow old fashioned wheat. The wheat we used to have before genetic mutilation, the rise in celiac disease, and the issues with gluten. I don't know if it will make all the difference I hope it does, but I won't know until I try. I have discovered being a small time hobby homesteader, it is easy enough to find the heirloom seeds and I have access to organic fertilizer.
Wheat has to be sown in the fall before the frost. It's called winter wheat around here and I've figured as I rearrange garden spots and livestock pens, I should be able to produce about 3 bushels a year. I'll keep you posted.
My other project for the winter involves maintaining fresh vegetables. I'm setting up the greenhouse now and getting the seeds started in pots. Even if you don't have a greenhouse, if you have a window and heat, it is possible to raise something even in an apartment. I'll keep you posted on the greenhouse as well. I did so much canning last year expecting a fuller house, that I've got a bit of "room to play" with this idea. Even with home canning and no preservatives, fresh is still better!
Simplifying may seem like a full time job, but in reality, it's more than a job, it's a lifestyle. Tending the garden and sharing good news is really what life is supposed to be about!
